A Special Court on Friday found four accused guilty in connection with a live bomb found near a temple at Chandpole area during the 2008 Jaipur serial bomb blasts.
Judge Ramesh Kumar Joshi will pronounce the sentence on April 8.
The court convicted Saifurrahman, Mohammad Saif, Mohammad Sarwar Azmi and Shahbaz Ahmed under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activity Prevention Act (UAPA) and Explosive Substances Act. These sections carry a maximum punishment of life imprisonment.
On May 13, 2008, eight bombs exploded at various places in Jaipur and a bomb was found near a temple in Chandpole Bazar. The bomb was defused later.
The same accused were sentenced to death in eight other cases related to the Jaipur bomb blasts, but the Rajasthan High Court acquitted all of them in March 2023. The High Court, in its order acquitting the accused, had pointed out shortcomings in the investigation. The government has filed an appeal challenging the HC order in the Supreme Court, which is yet to pronounce its verdict.
Speaking to the media, advocate Minhajul Haq, representing the accused, said , “No witness statement was recorded by the prosecution. The facts of this case and the eight blast cases in which the accused were set free are the same. In this case too, the prosecution could not find who had placed the bicycle carrying the bomb in front of the temple. We will appeal in the High Court against the conviction.”
The prosecution has recorded the statements of 112 witnesses and presented about 1,200 documents in the court.
