The Academic Council of Mangalore University in its meeting on Thursday approved a proposal to grant autonomy to Canara College, an affiliated college of the university, in Mangaluru.
Earlier, a committee of the university reviewed and submitted a report in support of granting autonomy to the college from 2025-26 to 2035-36.
Now the proposal of granting autonomy to the college will be placed before the Syndicate, the highest decision making body of the university, for its approval. Later, it will be sent to the State government for approval. If the government approved the proposal, the college will get the autonomous status.
It will be the 11th college of the university, if it gets the autonomous status.
Other colleges, which were granted autonomy earlier were Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara College, Ujire; School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya; St. Aloysius College, St. Agnes College and St. Ann’s College — all in Mangaluru; Alva’s College, Moodbidri; Poornaprajna College and MGM College, both in Udupi; Vivekananda College of Arts, Science and Commerce and St. Philomena College, both in Puttur.
Of them St. Aloysius College has now emerged as a Deemed to be University.
The Mangalore University presently has 160 affiliated colleges.
Academic calendar postponed
The Vice-Chancellor of the university P.L. Dharma, who presided over the meeting, told the council that first, third, and fifth semester undergraduate classes of the university will end on December 20, instead of November 22 as previously announced.
The second, fourth, and sixth semester undergraduate classes will start from February 10, 2026, instead of January 12, 2026. The same even semester classes will end on June 5, 2026 instead of May 8, 2026 as announced earlier, he said.
The academic year 2026-27 will begin in August, 2026, Prof. Dharma said.
He said that the academic calender of 2025-26 academic year has been revised, for both undergraduate and postgraduate programme, due to the delay in the appointment of guest teachers to government colleges. Hence, academic schedule of the university has been postponed by a month, he said.
Referring to the evaluation of answer scripts, the Vice-Chancellor said, “With the intention of speeding up the evaluation, we have sent a proposal to UUCMS to carry out this on a remote basis, and if approved, the evaluation can be expedited.”
