ADILABAD: Adilabad district has recorded a 25 per cent decline in road accident-related deaths in the first six months of 2026 compared to the corresponding period in 2025, according to police.

Official data shows that 217 road accidents were reported in the first half of 2025, resulting in 86 deaths and 260 injuries. In the same period this year, 209 accidents were reported, with 65 deaths and 216 persons injured.

Police attributed the decline to road safety awareness programmes conducted under the ‘Arrive Alive’ initiative. Measures included campaigns among students, government employees and residents of villages along National Highway 44, along with the formation of road safety clubs such as ‘Khaki Kids’.

Superintendent of police Akhil Mahajan said Adilabad secured fourth place in the state in reducing road accident-related deaths, after Cyberabad, Sangareddy and Jogulamba Gadwal districts.

He said enforcement measures such as checks on drunk driving, monitoring of overspeeding, insistence on helmet and seat belt use, action against vehicles without number plates, identification of accident-prone black spots and increased highway patrolling contributed to the decline.

Police also installed displays of accident-damaged vehicles and cardboard replicas of patrol vehicles at identified locations on NH 44 to alert motorists.

The SP said efforts were aimed at creating awareness that road safety is a shared responsibility and that adherence to traffic rules by the public is essential for sustained improvement.
