Maharashtra Legislative Assembly witnessed a stormy session on the last day of the Budget session on Wednesday (March 25, 2026) after the Opposition objected to a Bill, seeking discussion on the issue. The Opposition and the treasury benches confronted each other, with shouting rallies. The Speaker had to adjourn the session for a few minutes before reconvening and passing the bill in question. The opposition walked out in protest.

This pertained to a bill to amend the Mumbai municipal corporation act and to re-enact certain rules relating to fixation of capital value, levy and collection of property tax with retrospective effect. After the Speaker read the citation, the Opposition objected and sought to speak on the issue. It led to heated arguments between the treasury and the opposition.

“We didn’t have an objection over the passing of the Bill. But we wanted to speak about it. We sought an opportunity to put forth our point of view. We wanted to ask if legal opinion was taken about it. As Opposition, we have the right to ask questions. They bulldozed over the opposition,” Shiv Sena UBT MLA Sunil Prabhu said.

“We had raised so many issues. But we haven’t got satisfactory answers for any of them. Government is not serious. The entire session was handled very lightly. Why did the government insist on bringing crucial Bills at the last minute and pass them hurriedly without any discussion?” Anil Parab and Jayant Patil asked.

“The image of Maharashtra has been blackened by this legislative session. This is the first time a Minister has been beaten by the government’s police, and he has had to seek justice from the House”, Mr. Parab said.

Meanwhile, the Speaker expressed anger and agitation over the pandemonium on the floor of the House. “Maharashtra legislature is a premium legislative body. Nobody should behave to tarnish its image,” Rahul Narvekar, Speaker of Legislative Assembly, said.

He added that the Opposition had behaved irresponsibly. “The Bill was mentioned in the schedule today. The Opposition sought time till after the Chief Minister’s speech to study the bill. It was decided mutually. And yet they created ruckus on the floor of the House,” he said.
