Six AIADMK councillors on Friday raised the issue of property tax revision during the Corporation council meeting and staged a walkout, stating that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, during his recent visit to Erode, failed to announce any reduction.

Mayor S. Nagarathinam chaired the meeting, attended by Corporation Commissioner Arpit Jain, Deputy Mayor V. Selvaraj, councillors and officials.

Opposition leader and AIADMK councillor M.D. Thangamuthu said the council had passed a special resolution in March 2025 urging the State government to cut the revised property tax. “Even after seven months, there has been no response,” he said, adding that the Chief Minister’s silence on the matter during his November 26 visit was disappointing. He also sought to know whether councillors had taken up the issue with Mr. Stalin when they met him.

AIADMK councillors further questioned the delay in constructing retaining walls along the Pichaikaran Pallam canal, a project the Corporation had promised a year ago. They also alleged that several ward-level demands had not been acted upon, prompting their walkout.

DMK councillors, too, expressed dissatisfaction, saying officials were not responding to their requests on basic works in their wards. With elections only six months away, they said they were finding it difficult to answer voters. A councillor also flagged that the newly established satellite bus terminal at Solar was located within Lakkapuram panchayat limits and sought clarity on whether revenue would go to the Corporation or the panchayat.

The Commissioner clarified that a government order had been issued to merge four panchayats, including Lakkapuram and 46 Pudur, with the Corporation, and that the merger would take effect after the gazette notification. He added that once the satellite bus stand becomes operational, commercial activity in the premises would increase.

Councillors also raised issues related to the dedicated drinking water supply scheme, pending road re-laying, and the absence of street lights.
