AP Records Decline in Crime Cases in 2024

Vijayawada:Andhra Pradesh recorded a decline in the number of crimes registered under IPC, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Special and Local Laws during 2024, with 1.68 lakh cases booked compared to 1.84 lakh in 2023 and 1.95 lakh in 2022.

Official National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data showed that offences against women and children accounted for 17,480 cases during the year.

Police registered 441 rape cases and 102 attempt to rape cases. Cases booked for sexual intercourse by deceitful means stood at 48.

A total of 2,389 cases were registered for assault or use of criminal force against women with intent to outrage modesty, while 843 cases related to sexual harassment were reported.

Among sexual harassment cases, 12 were reported at office premises, 26 at workplaces such as shops, malls, factories and homes, seven in public transport systems and 60 in public places or pathways. Cases reported in shelter homes for women and children stood at 65, while 673 cases were reported at other locations.

Police also registered 189 cases relating to assault or criminal force with intent to disrobe women, 134 voyeurism cases, 977 stalking cases and 2,956 cases relating to insulting the modesty of women.

The state recorded 72 dowry death cases and 9,165 cases relating to cruelty by husbands or relatives. Cases involving kidnapping or inducing women for marriage stood at 110, while six cases were registered relating to miscarriage offences.

As many as 898 murder cases were registered in the state during the year.

Cases relating to causing death by negligence stood at 8,813, including 7,683 road accident deaths. Hit-and-run cases accounted for 701 cases, while 6,982 cases related to other accidents. Deaths due to rail accidents stood at 27 and medical negligence cases at 29.

Police registered 412 cases of abetment to suicide and 1,523 attempt to murder cases. Cases relating to attempt to commit culpable homicide stood at 12, while organised crime cases were also reported at 12.

Cases relating to voluntarily causing hurt stood at 2.25 lakh, while 9,438 cases involved voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means.

A total of 457 cases were registered for voluntarily causing hurt or using force to deter public servants from discharging duty, while 931 cases related to acts endangering life or safety.

The state recorded two acid attack cases and three attempt to acid attack cases.

Police registered 1,816 cases relating to wrongful restraint or confinement and 468 kidnapping cases. Nearly 29 cases involving missing children, with 31 victims, were treated as kidnapping cases. Kidnapping for ransom cases stood at 11.

As many as 11 cases were registered under offences affecting the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India, while another 11 cases related to offences against the state.

Cases relating to rioting stood at 447, including three communal violence cases. Land and property dispute-related cases stood at 43, while 11 cases related to water disputes.

Police registered 1,829 cases relating to offences against public tranquillity and 12,022 theft cases.

House theft cases stood at 597 involving 605 victims, while vehicle theft cases numbered 5,078 involving 5,208 victims. Six cases related to idol thefts from places of worship and 21 cases involved thefts from vehicles.

The state recorded 4,061 burglary cases, including 830 day burglaries and 3,299 night burglaries.

Cases relating to forgery, cheating and fraud stood at 6,202. ATM-related fraud cases numbered 89, while credit and debit card fraud cases stood at 132.

Police also registered 13,958 cases relating to rash driving on public roads, 23 offences relating to religion and 50 cases of cheating by impersonation.
