HYDERABAD: The number of persons arrested in the surrogacy and child trafficking scandal involving the Universal Srushti Fertility Centre in nine cases has reached 25, which includes doctors from King George Hospital in Vizag and the brother of a former YSRC legislator.

While the investigation has revealed the involvement of one Sanjay, the police are still trying to establish his role in the web of surrogacy and illegal adoption. Labelled A7, he has been absconding since the case was registered and remains under the police radar.

A special investigation team (SIT) will be formed to take up the case for a thorough probe and to explore possible angles. The team will include multiple inspectors and an ACP-level officer, and it will be monitored by a senior officer. The SIT may take up the investigation soon to uncover possible angles and probe the network involved in illegal surrogacy.

Dr Vasupalli Ravi, head of the department of anaesthesia and deputy superintendent at KGH, arrested last week, is the brother of former YSRC former MLA Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar.

The Gopalapuram police apprehended three doctors, who were then sent to remand. Six others arrested on Wednesday have been identified as agents and mediators who procure children from women belonging to vulnerable backgrounds.

Rathnam P. and Meenakshi K. from Vizag, Saroja B. from NTR district, Karuna Sri from Vijayawada, and Vijay Kumar and Yamuna from Kothagudem were assisting Namratha, Vidyulatha, and Santoshi in procuring days-old babies to sell to childless couples for ₹30 to ₹40 lakh — equally split between cash and cheque.

While the cash transactions are being investigated, the cheques have been sent to the FSL.

A source said that the amount generated through surrogacy and IVF procedures amounted to ₹40 to ₹50 crore. If the investigation suggests money laundering by any means, it is likely that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) will look into the case. However, a senior official confirmed that no instructions have been received for the ED to take up the matter yet.
