BAREILLY: In a case of electricity theft in CB Ganj, a warrant was mistakenly issued in the name of a 65-year-old neighbour, Munni Devi, instead of the real accused, a 70-year-old woman.
As a result, the police sent Munni Devi to jail on the 13th. The jailed woman’s son, 38-year-old Rakesh, filed a complaint at the police station claiming his mother was innocent. Following an investigation, it was revealed that Munni Devi was wrongly imprisoned due to the incorrect warrant.
Sub-Inspector Saurabh Yadav from CB Ganj police station submitted a petition to the court acknowledging the error in issuing the warrant, which led to the woman being detained in jail for three days. Munni, the wife of Chhote Mansoori from the village of Bandia under CB Ganj police station, had an FIR filed against her in 2018 under section 138 for power theft and electricity dues.
The case went to court, and a warrant was issued for her to be presented in court. Sub-Inspector Saurabh Yadav took Munni Devi into custody on April 13 because her name was on the warrant, preventing the arrest of the actual accused. Munni Devi, the wife of Janki Prasad alias Pote, was taken into custody and sent to jail on April 13. Both women had similar names and lived nearby.
Munni Devi’s son, 38-year-old Rakesh Halwai, asserted his mother’s innocence and pushed for action. Upon verification, it was found that Munni Devi, the wife of Pote, was wrongfully jailed for electricity theft. The arrest was made solely based on paperwork without proper investigation.
SP City Manush Pareek told TOI, “Prima facie it appears that the name on the warrant by the honourable court was not clear because of handwriting. This is why Muni Devi Wife of Janki Prasad alias Pote was arrested instead of actual Munni wife of Chote Mansoori. After this matter came into notice, the sub-inspector submitted a petition, and the woman in jail was released. A departmental inquiry is also ordered.”
Chhote Mansoori from Bandia married Munni from West Bengal. Both the Munni’s live in the same neighbourhood.
