The Bengaluru Police on Friday detained lawyer K. N. Jagadish Kumar, whose name was brought up in the concluded monsoon session by MLA for Yelahanka S. R. Vishwanath, and questioned him for hours.
The Kodigehalli Police had served a notice to Jagadish after a social worker filed a complaint claiming the lawyer hurt sentiments of the SC/ST community and provoked enmity between religious groups.
The complainant, Manjunath, showed a video to the police shared by Jagadish from his Instagram account, and alleged that the latter had commented on both SC/ST women and the Muslim community.
The video was allegedly intended towards MLA for Vijayapura Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, as Jagadish said that Yatnal should get one of his sons married to a woman from the SC/ST community, and another to a Muslim woman, according to the complainant.
“The comments by Jagadish not only hurt the sentiments of the SC/ST community, but they are also of a nature that promotes enmity between the Lingayat and Muslim communities. The video also promotes enmity between two religions,” the complainant told the police.
Based on his complaint, the police have filed an FIR against Jagadish under sections 196 (acts promoting enmity, hatred, or ill-will between different groups based on religion, race, language, caste, or other grounds) and 299 (acts performed with the deliberate and malicious intention of outraging the religious feelings of any class of citizens in India by insulting their religion or religious beliefs) of the BNS.
A police officer from Kodigehalli confirmed that Jagadish was detained for questioning, but didn’t provide much clarity on the case.
“We cannot reveal anything now. If his answers are not satisfying, we will think about the arrest,” the officer said.
Mr. Vishwanath had also said that Jagadish passed baseless comments about everyone and urged the Home Minister to take action against the latter. It remains unclear whether he was questioned on the Instagram video issue or any other case was registered against him.
