'Bihar's streets to be Nepal-like': RJD leader's inflammatory remark on eve of election results; FIR filed

NEW DELHI: On the eve of the Bihar assembly election results, a Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader was booked for making an inflammatory remark, saying that if the RJD candidates were “made to lose”, scenes in Bihar would be like what was witnessed in Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.“Many of our candidates were forcibly defeated in 2020…..I have requested all our officials involved in the counting process that, if you defeat the person whom the public has given their mandate, the same scenes you witnessed on the roads in Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka will be seen on the roads of Bihar as well,” RJD leader Sunil Singh said. Singh, in an apparent threat, said common people will take to the streets if anything goes against the public sentiment.“You will see the common people taking to the streets…We are absolutely vigilant about this, and we urge you not to do anything that goes against public sentiment, that the public will not accept… We are getting 140-160 seats and the new government will be formed in the state under Tejashwi Yadav’s leadership”, claimed.Soon after Singh’s remark, the Bihar DGP ordered an FIR against Sunil Singh for giving an “inflammatory” statement.Reacting to his remark, JD(U) MP Sanjay Jha said: “They know what the result will be. They have accepted defeat and started instigating their people. What kind of language are these people (RJD leader Sunil Singh) using…As per our assessment, we will register a huge win.”Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar also said: “All preparations have been made. Police are deployed in adequate numbers. Victory celebrations (by any political party) will not be allowed anywhere, as per the Election Commission’s guidelines. Counting of votes will be concluded well.”Axis My India and Today’s Chanakya on Wednesday forecast a sweeping return for chief minister Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with the opposition Mahagathbandhan projected to fall short of the majority mark in the Bihar elections. While the Axis My India, despite giving a majority to the ruling camp, predicted a close range gap between the NDA and Mahagathbandhan, Today’s Chanakya figures showed that the opposition camp may not cross 100 seats in the 243-seat Bihar assembly contest.Aixs My India (AIM) predicted 121-141 seats for the NDA with 43%vote share, and 98-118 seats for the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan with 41% vote share. Prashant Kishore’s Jan Suraaj is likely to win 0-2 seats, according to AMI.A poll of polls on Tuesday indicated a likely return of the NDA to power, with the alliance expected to secure around 148 seats. The RJD-led Mahagathbandhan, despite campaigning as the agent of change, is projected to fall short, with estimates placing it at around 88 seats.
