Bulldozers Take Center Stage in Uttar Pradesh Weddings

In Uttar Pradesh, wedding processions are taking a unique turn as some couples opt for bulldozers to mark their special day. Rahul Yadav, 25, and his bride Karishma made their Bidai (bride’s farewell) memorable on Friday by riding on a decorated bulldozer in Raksa, Jhansi. The bulldozer, adorned with flowers and balloons, was part of a procession that included 11 more bulldozers, each ridden by friends and family members.

Yadav explained that the gesture was a nod to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s controversial use of bulldozers in demolishing properties linked to alleged criminals, particularly targeting properties in Muslim-majority areas. Adityanath’s actions have earned him the nickname “Bulldozer Baba,” though they have drawn criticism for bypassing legal processes, with the Supreme Court halting such demolitions last year.

This trend of incorporating bulldozers into celebrations isn’t unique to Uttar Pradesh. Similar stunts were seen elsewhere, including a controversial display in the US during India Day Parade 2022, which faced backlash for its association with communal division. In Gorakhpur, Krishan Verma used a bulldozer in his marriage procession last year to assert BJP’s power after a disappointing election result.

While some see it as a show of support for the BJP and its bulldozer-driven initiatives, others argue it reinforces a divisive symbol. Critics point out the bulldozer’s association with coercive tactics against minorities and political adversaries. Despite this, many continue to embrace it as a symbol of power and influence, ensuring that these wedding processions, complete with heavy machinery, are not easily forgotten.
