Cyclone Ditwah Live Updates: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a red alert for the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and orange alerts in Puducherry, Karaikal, and adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coasts as Cyclone Ditwah approached. The cyclonic storm continued its north-northwestward movement over coastal Sri Lanka and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal. The IMD had earlier confirmed that the system developed in the southwest Bay of Bengal and is likely to make landfall on November 30.

Heavy rain alert: In view of the approaching storm, the Met department has warned heavy to very heavy rainfall (64-204 mm in 24 hours) over northern Tamil Nadu till December 1, with extremely heavy spells (over 204 mm in 24 hours) likely on November 29 and 30. In its bulletin, the IMD said the Cyclone Ditwah weather system has strengthened with powerful winds and the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall. Cyclone Ditwah is expected to enter the southwest Bay of Bengal near the coasts of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh by the early hours of Sunday.

Advisory: Fishermen have been cautioned against venturing into the sea amid expected rough conditions over the next few days. Farmers have been advised to take necessary precautions considering the likelihood of strong winds and heavy rain across several parts of Andhra Pradesh. Puducherry District Collector A Kulothungan was quoted by PTI as saying that people should avoid going out unless absolutely necessary. He advised the public to avoid standing under trees, lamp posts, or inside old buildings. Children, in particular, should not play in open areas. He added that people can contact 1077, 1070, 112, or the Disaster Management Authority via WhatsApp at 94889 81070 for guidance and preventive measures to protect themselves against nature’s fury.
