Hyderabad: Telangana is bracing for a wet spell over the next five days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing heavy rain and thunderstorm alerts for several districts. The monsoon, which made landfall over Kerala on Saturday, eight days ahead of schedule, is expected to push earlier into Telangana too.
The IMD had issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall in Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Kamareddy and Medak, while Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Rajanna Sircilla, and Sangareddy are on yellow alert for heavy rain. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30–40 km/h) are expected across all 33 districts on Sunday.
In Hyderabad and nearby areas, cloudy skies, light to moderate rain, and gusty winds are expected over the next 24 hours, with maximum and minimum temperatures likely around 32°C and 25°C respectively. Morning hours may see hazy conditions.
Rainfall reports from the Telangana Development Planning Society showed steady showers across north Telangana. On Saturday, Rangareddy district recorded the highest rainfall at 33.5. Parts of Hyderabad such as Khairatabad and Shaikpet saw 22–24 mm, while Kukatpally and Madhapur in Medchal–Malkajgiri and Rangareddy received over 20 mm.
District-wise cumulative data showed Medchal–Malkajgiri, Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy receiving the highest hourly rainfall as of 8 pm Saturday—between 3.4 mm and 5.9 mm, categorised as ‘light’ but consistent.
Alongside rainfall, a 5–7°C drop in daytime temperatures is forecast across the state over the next three days. The cooler spell comes after a long dry stretch and is expected to offer some relief, though low-lying areas may see waterlogging.
Weather officials are also tracking a likely low-pressure system forming over the west-central and north Bay of Bengal by May 27. If it develops as expected, it could bring another wave of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Telangana beginning mid-week.
By Monday, the rain belt is expected to shift slightly southward, with gusty winds and showers likely in Hyderabad, Rangareddy, Medchal–Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Mahbubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet and Jogulamba Gadwal.
