Cold wave likely in parts of northwest, central and east India this week: IMD

Cold wave conditions are likely to grip isolated pockets across northwest, central and east India through the week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.

According to the IMD, isolated parts of Punjab and Haryana (December 7, 10–11), West Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha (December 7–8), Chhattisgarh (December 7), as well as Jharkhand and Odisha (December 7) are expected to be affected.

Temperatures dip across several states

Punjab, Haryana and east Uttar Pradesh recorded cold wave conditions Friday, with west Madhya Pradesh reporting cold wave to severe cold wave conditions. Minimum temperatures dropped below 5°C at most places in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Gilgit-Baltistan–Muzaffarabad, and at many places in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, according to an IMD statement.

This week, temperatures between 5°C and 10°C prevailed across Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and parts of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand. Adampur in Punjab recorded the lowest minimum temperature over the plains at 2.2°C.

Several regions reported minimum temperatures that remained below normal. South Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha reported departures of -5.1°C or lower. Uttar Pradesh, north Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan, north and central Chhattisgarh, north Odisha and parts of Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal also saw temperatures lower than normal.

There is a rising trend of 1–2°C in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, Saurashtra and Kutch, with parts of central, east and northeast India recording a fall of up to 3°C, reported IMD.

Forecast and fog warning

Minimum temperatures across northwest India will rise by 2–3°C over the next two days and fall again by 3–5°C by mid-next week. Central India will see a rise of around 2°C after 24 hours. West India will see a fall of up to 3°C over the next four days. No major change is expected elsewhere, added IMD.

Dense fog will affect early morning visibility in parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from December 7 to 11. Himachal Pradesh will see fog until December 9, Odisha will record fog on December 7 and 8.

Jharkhand reported a sharp dip in temperatures, with Gumla recording the lowest at 3°C. The Ranchi Meteorological Centre issued a cold wave alert for 11 districts until Sunday morning. The alert covers Garhwa, Palamu, Chatra, Latehar, Lohardaga, Gumla, Simdega, Ranchi, Ramgarh, Bokaro and Khunti.
