A day after the recovery of the burnt body of a woman in Tripura’s Gomati district, the police arrested four suspects on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the district superintendent of police also suspended an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) for negligence, after it emerged that no action was taken despite the deceased and her husband approaching the police on Friday itself and reporting that they were threatened and assaulted by one Mana Majumder and his associates over a personal enmity. The officer in-charge had asked ASI Sanjoy Sarkar to verify the matter, but the latter allegedly did not do so.

The death of the woman also sparked a political controversy as the suspects turned out to be alleged associates of a local MLA.

Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy accompanied by BJP MLA Abhishek Debroy visited the house of the deceased woman and later told reporters that strict action would be taken against the culprits.

“Whatever needs to be done in this case, as per the law, will be done,” he said.

A delegation of Left Front MLAs, including Shyamal Chakraborty, Shailendra Chandra Nath, Sudip Sarkar, and Ramu Das, also visited the house of the woman and talked to her husband and other family members.

“In the last two months, the control of administration is slowly moving into the hands of miscreants. We shall raise the issue in the Assembly and seek justice,” Chakraborty said.

Congress legislators Sudip Roy Barman and Birajit Sinha, accompanied by party workers, too, visited the house of the victim. Later, they met the deputy inspector general of police and the superintendent of police and demanded strict action in the matter.

“It is clear that some miscreants, including the nephew of an MLA, were involved in the incident… None is above the law. We have demanded that they should be arrested before the arrival of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 22, or else, Congress workers shall seek justice for the deceased woman before the PM on his way to the Tripurasundari temple,” a Congress leader said.
