Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood on Monday (March 24, 2025) indicated a potential rise in electricity prices, attributing it to a ₹27,000 crore debt left by the previous AAP government with power distribution companies (Discoms) through the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC).

Responding to a question by AAP MLA Imran Hussain in the Delhi Assembly on the expected increase in electricity tariffs, Mr. Sood stated that Discoms are authorised to hike rates to recover the outstanding amount.

He noted that during the previous government’s tenure, the Delhi High Court had directed DERC to issue a tariff order, but the administration failed to safeguard public interests.

“The previous government has left a debt of ₹27,000 crores of regulatory assets with the discoms through DERC. To recover this, the companies are authorised to increase the electricity rates. During the tenure of the previous government, on the orders of the High Court, DERC was ordered to bring tariff orders,” he said.

“That government could not protect the interests of the public. In the coming time, electricity prices will rise, and perhaps some people even want this for their political gains. However, the government remains in touch with DERC and is closely monitoring the situation,” Mr. Sood added.

Meanwhile, former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Atishi on Monday (March 24, 2025) criticised the BJP-led central government, alleging that the promised ₹2,500 financial assistance for women had not been delivered and expressed hope that the ruling party would fulfil its commitments during the Budget Session on Monday (March 24, 2025).

Speaking to ANI, the Leader of the Opposition said, “The BJP made a lot of promises before the elections. We hope that those promises are fulfilled in this budget session. The first and most important promise was that Delhi’s women would receive ₹2,500 on March 8. Till today, even the registration of that scheme has not started. It is clear that PM Modi lied and betrayed the people of Delhi.”

“We hope the people of Delhi are not betrayed in this budget,” she asserted

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday (March 24, 2025) prepared the ceremonial ‘Kheer’ ahead of the inaugural budget session of the newly elected government in the Delhi Legislative Assembly.

Marking a unique start to the financial proceedings, the newly elected Chief Minister extended her gratitude to those involved in the budget-making process.

The budget session, running from March 24 to March 28 with provisions for extension, marks a significant moment for the BJP government, which returned to power after 27 years in the recent 2025 Delhi Legislative Assembly election.

Ms. Gupta will move a motion for the election of financial committees, marking an important step in the assembly’s financial governance, according to the List of Business of the House.

“Rekha Gupta Chief Minister to move the following motion: “That the Members of this House do proceed to elect in the manner required under Rule 192(2), Rule 194(2) and Rule 196(2) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Legislative Assembly of National Capital Territory of Delhi, nine Members each from amongst themselves to serve as Members of the Committee on Public Accounts, Committee on Estimates and Committee on Government Undertakings beginning from 1st April 2025,” the list read.

Additionally, Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht and Member Om Prakash Sharma will present the First Report of the Business Advisory Committee. This report is expected to provide valuable insights into the assembly’s business and legislative agenda. Members Sanjay Goyal and Poonam Sharma will present the First Report of the Committee on Private Members’ Bills, according to LoB.

This Budget Session is significant, as it follows the recent 2025 Delhi Legislative Assembly election, which saw the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) return to power after 27 years.

Earlier, the BJP government tabled two CAG reports on the now scrapped excise policy and the healthcare system of the national capital, during the first assembly session held last month.

Meanwhile, members Surya Prakash Khatri, Mohan Singh Bisht and Raj Kumar Bhatia will continue the discussion regarding water shortage, water logging, sewerage blockage and desilting of drains in Delhi initiated on 3rd March 2025 as directed by the Speaker.

In Question Hour, Members will pose starred questions, and the respective authorities will provide replies. Un-starred questions will be laid on the table for future discussion.

Special Mention (Rule-280): Members will raise matters under Rule-280 with the Chair’s permission, allowing for discussions on pressing issues.

Moreover, Ms. Gupta will move a motion to elect nine members each for the Committee on Public Accounts, Committee on Estimates, and Committee on Government Undertakings.
