A 20-year-old engineering student from Jharkhand died by suicide at her hostel room in a private university in Chhattisgarh. Police said she left behind a suicide note, citing examination stress as well as the financial burden faced by her family.
The incident took place on Saturday evening, when she was alone in the room, at the university in Raigarh district. The victim was a second-year B.Tech Computer Science student and hailed from Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.
Sources said she had five backlog papers from the first semester. She had appeared for three of the exams this month, and two more were to take place this week.
She shared the hostel room with two more students, who had gone home after the exams.
The matter came to light when the student did not respond to phone calls from her family members, who then contacted her hostel.
Sources said a hostel employee went to her room. When she did not open the door after several knocks, the employee suspected something amiss and alerted the authorities.
During investigation, police said they recovered a suicide note from her room. Police said the note revealed that she was under stress due to the examinations. In the note, she also apologised to her parents for not being able to complete her studies and expressed guilt over her parents exhausting their savings for her education.
