NELLORE: YSRC Nellore district president and former minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy on Sunday alleged that farmers had suffered losses of nearly ₹25,000 crore over the past two years due to lack of remunerative prices and absence of crop compensation.

Addressing the media at the party office, he criticised the government for continuing what he termed an anti-farmer approach, alleging that it had failed to ensure Minimum Support Price (MSP) or timely procurement.

He claimed that maize farmers, in particular, were facing severe distress, with losses of ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 per acre due to poor prices despite high input costs.

Kakani said farmers who had earlier suffered losses in crops such as cotton, tobacco and chilli shifted to maize following government advice, but were now struggling again due to lack of support.

He also alleged that vegetable and fruit growers were unable to recover even harvesting costs, forcing some to abandon crops.

Accusing the government of ignoring farmers’ grievances while ministers were busy with foreign tours, he warned of statewide protests if immediate relief was not provided.

“The government must step in to ensure fair prices and support farmers, or we will intensify agitations,” he said.

Kakani added that the previous YSRC government had mechanisms such as a price stabilisation fund and procurement systems to support farmers. He demanded urgent intervention to stabilise prices and prevent further distress among the farming community.
