A fire awareness programme and fire-fighting drill was conducted for NCC Cadets at Kalligudi on Thursday.
Some 500 cadets, who are in the annual training camp of 28th Battalion of NCC, Madurai, at Kamaraj College of Engineering and Technology, Kalligudi, witnessed the drill and had hands-on experience on operating fire extinguishers.
“We explained to them about fire chemistry and basic fire fighting techniques,” said Madurai District Officer T. Venkataramanan.
The cadets were also given demonstration about rescue methods during disasters without using stretchers. Similarly, they were told about stop, drop and roll method of saving when caught in fire. People should not attempt to hold the person caught in fire but cover them with bedsheets to put out the flames, he added.
The cadets were told how to read the code of hazardous chemicals being carried by trucks before attempting to put out the fire.
Mr. Venkataramanan also told the cadets that they were given priority in recruitment in the Fire and Rescue Services Department.
Assistant District Officer P.Thirumurugan, Kalligudi Station Officer S. Ravikumar, Station Officer (Transport) K. Varatharajan and Station Officers (Trainee) were among those who were present.
