The police on Thursday arrested five persons on charge of possessing 13,000 tablets of a prescription drug and 2.5 kg of ganja.

Rahul (28) of Kovaipudur, Prasath (29) of Ponnaiyarajapuram, Muhammed Anas (31) of South Ukkadam, Balaji (28) of Chetty Street and John Joseph (34) of Highways Colony in the city were arrested with the contraband.

The five men, who travelled on two scooters, landed in the custody of the Kuniyamuthur police during a vehicle check within their jurisdiction. The police inspected their vehicles after they gave contradicting statements. The contraband substances were found hidden in the storage areas of their scooters.

The police said that the seized tablets were valued around ₹5.2 lakh.
