Day one of the reopening of the junction under Tarnaka flyover saw relatively low traffic and mild congestion at key U-turns, owing to the Good Friday holiday. The junction, shut for nearly a decade, was thrown open to commuters on a trial basis on Friday (April 18, 2025) to evaluate its impact on vehicular movement.

Traffic officials stationed at the Tarnaka junction said the real test will begin from Monday when regular weekday traffic resumes. “The volume of traffic has been minimal since it’s a public holiday. We’ll get a better sense of the traffic flow and bottlenecks only after the work week starts,” said an officer from the Nallakunta Traffic police.

Vehicles from Osmania University are now allowed to move straight ahead towards Lalapet, and turn right towards Habsiguda. Similarly, traffic from Lalapet can proceed straight to the university, and take a right turn towards Mettuguda.

The officials noted slight congestion near the U-turn points, particularly around HUDA Complex and IRISET. “The U-turns are seeing some slowdowns, but it’s manageable for now. We’ll observe the situation and adjust the traffic flow if necessary,” a traffic constable added.

The traffic arrangements will remain in effect until May 2 as part of a trial run to evaluate the viability of reopening the junction on a permanent basis. Commuters have been urged to follow signage, adhere to directions, and cooperate with traffic personnel throughout the period. “Depending on the level of congestion observed during the trial, there is a possibility that the junction may be closed again,” an officer said.
