Informing the development, Jaishankar wrote, “Received a call from Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi of Iran. Discussed the present situation.”

Earlier, Jaishankar also spoke with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani and Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and discussed the West Asia conflict and its impact on global energy supplies.

The development comes amid soaring tensions in West Asia after US President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to Iran, threatening to destroy Tehran’s power plants and bridges if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened for shipping by Tuesday.

Global oil and gas prices increased sharply after Iran virtually blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow shipping lane which handles about 20% of global oil and gas supply, since US-Israel launched joint strikes on the Islamic nation.

However, Iran has reportedly allowed ships of friendly nations, including India, to transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
