The police have arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with the theft of a little over 28 sovereigns of gold jewellery and ₹2.5 lakh from a house near Vadavalli in Coimbatore on April 22. The police recovered 23 sovereigns of the stolen jewellery from him.

C. Sethuraman, a resident of Selvapuram in the city, was arrested for the daylight burglary at the residence of R. Palanisamy, 75, of S.M. Nagar at Sundapalayam.

The police said Mr. Palanisamy, who is a retired bus conductor of TNSTC, left his house to invite relatives and friends for a function in the family. His wife and daughter left the house around 12.15 p.m. for Town Hall for some purchases.

Mr. Palanisamy returned home around 1.30 p.m. and found the front door broken open. He checked in the bedroom and found a little over 28 sovereigns of jewellery and ₹2.5 lakh missing. He lodged a complaint with the Vadavalli police station.

A special team of the police examined visuals from more than 100 surveillance cameras from various locations and zeroed in on the burglar, who used a two-wheeler to escape after the housebreak. The police identified the burglar as Sethuraman, who has two cases against him at Selvapuram and one case at Saibaba Colony police stations.

Vadavalli inspector Ramesh Kumar said Sethuraman was arrested on Sunday and he was remanded in judicial custody.
