New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged voters in West Bengal to participate in large numbers as polling for the second phase of the 2026 Assembly elections began across 142 constituencies.

In a post on X, Modi called on citizens to strengthen democracy through active participation, with special emphasis on women and young voters. He encouraged them to turn out in record numbers and exercise their franchise to make democracy more vibrant and participative.

The scale of the second phase is significant, covering nearly half of the state’s 294 assembly seats. Around 3.21 crore voters are eligible to vote, including over 1.64 crore men, 1.57 crore women, and 792 third-gender voters. A total of 1,448 candidates, including 220 women, are contesting across 41,001 polling stations, more than 8,000 of which are managed entirely by women.

This phase is considered crucial in shaping the electoral outcome in the state. Authorities have made elaborate arrangements to ensure smooth and peaceful polling, especially after the record turnout witnessed in the first phase.

Polling began after extensive mock drills were conducted early in the morning to verify the proper functioning of EVMs and VVPAT machines. Election officials and polling agents gathered at various locations, including Baranagar, Shibpur, and Ballygunge, to carry out mandatory checks.

Security has been tightened across the state, with heavy deployment of Central Armed Police Forces at sensitive locations such as Kolkata Port and parts of South 24 Parganas. Polling stations have been placed under strict surveillance to prevent any disruptions.

Meanwhile, AISF President Naushad Siddiqui raised concerns over alleged voter intimidation in South 24 Parganas, citing a viral video. Complaints have been lodged with the Election Commission, and opposition parties have demanded action to ensure a fair voting process.

The high-stakes contest features the ruling Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, aiming to retain power, while the Bharatiya Janata Party is seeking to expand its presence in the state.

Out of the total polling stations, 39,301 are main stations and 1,700 are auxiliary. There are also 8,845 all-women-managed stations, 13 managed by persons with disabilities, and 258 model polling stations. Webcasting is being conducted at all 41,001 booths to ensure transparency.
