Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government has initiated the process to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, official sources said on Wednesday.

The state home department has been directed by chief minister Mohan Yadav to prepare the UCC draft bill for its approval by his cabinet, sources said.

Sources said that the state government is planning to implement the UCC by the end of the year.

Mr. Yadav dropped the hints on the move to implement the UCC in the state when he asked his ministerial colleagues to study the UCC law passed in the BJP-ruled states of Uttarakhand and Gujarat and give their suggestions at the council of ministers’ meeting here on Tuesday, sources said.

Sources said that a special session of the Assembly may be convened to pass the proposed UCC bill.

Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had constituted a committee in 2022 to study the implementation of UCC in MP when he was the chief minister.

However, the move to implement UCC had failed to take off then.
