A mudslide at Kumbanpara, near Adimali in Idukki district, late Saturday (October 25, 2025), partially buried two houses, reportedly trapping at least one family inside.

A massive search and rescue operation was underway to extricate the families. The police have rushed earth movers to remove the debris and rescue the families.

Idukki MP Dean Kuriakose told local reporters that emergency responders have contacted Biju and his wife, Sandhya, who are trapped in their house, over the mobile phone.

The Fire and Rescue Department, he said, were using a portable pneumatic drill to reach them by breaching the house’s concrete roof.

Mr Kuriakose said he was unsure whether there were any occupants in the neighbouring house. He said the district administration had evacuated residents of the disaster-prone locality due to the heavy rains that lashed Idukki district over the past few days.

However, he said, Biju and Sandhya had returned home from the relief camp to retrieve some important documents when the mishap occurred.

The government has rushed an NDRF team to the spot.
