A Class XII student from Vadavalli in Coimbatore drowned in Chithirai Chavadi anicut across River Noyyal on Saturday.

The police identified the deceased as P. Prithvi, a resident of Masaniamman Kovil Street at Vadavalli. He was studying in a private school at Vadavalli.

According to the Alandurai police, a group of nine students, including Prithvi, came to the anicut on Saturday afternoon to take bath. The water level in the anicut had increased following the recent rain.

“Prithvi went missing in the water while the students were playing and bathing. They panicked and alerted the fire and rescue services. The fire brigades carried out a search and found the student stuck in the mud at the bottom of the anicut,” said a police officer.

The police shifted the body to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where the post-mortem examination would be held on Sunday.
