Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Tokyo on Friday for a two-day visit that will include summit talks with his Japanese counterpart, Shigeru Ishiba, aimed at advancing economic and technological cooperation. In a statement issued before his departure, Modi described the visit as an opportunity to deepen “civilisational bonds and cultural ties” between India and Japan.

What is on the agenda of the visit? The Prime Minister said that the talks “would focus on shaping the next phase in the Special Strategic and Global Partnership, which has made steady and significant progress over the past 11 years”. “We would endeavour to give new wings to our collaboration, expand scope and ambition of our economic and investment ties, and advance cooperation in new and emerging technologies, including AI and semiconductors,” he added.

What is the schedule of PM Modi? The Japan visit, which runs through August 30, will be followed by a trip to China, where PM Modi is scheduled to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Tianjin on August 31 and September 1. He is also likely to hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday.
