In a commendable initiative, the ride-hailing app Rapido has launched dedicated support and rest spaces for gig workers across Mumbai, offering workers physical respite during strenuous daily shifts.

The ‘rest spaces’ provide free refreshments, shaded seating areas, mobile charging points, and short-break facilities for delivery partners and riders working long hours across the city.

This is being viewed as a worker-centric move aimed at improving the comfort and well-being of gig economy workers, particularly during extreme heat and long working hours. The initiative has received positive reactions online, with many users praising the company for acknowledging the challenges faced by gig workers and introducing support systems beyond conventional work benefits.

The initiative also reflects a deeper business strategy tied to the challenges faced by India’s gig economy during extreme summer heatwaves. As temperatures rise, a significant number of delivery and ride-hailing workers temporarily log off to avoid heat exhaustion, leading to a sharp drop in available riders. This often results in longer ETAs, higher surge pricing, and disruptions to the overall customer experience.

By setting up physical rest stops, Rapido is not only addressing worker well-being but also strengthening rider retention and operational continuity. These spaces allow workers to rest, cool down, recharge devices, and continue working without excessive fatigue, helping maintain fleet availability during peak demand hours.

The decision to open these zones to riders from platforms like Zomato, Swiggy, and Blinkit has also been widely seen as a smart ecosystem-building move. By offering support infrastructure to gig workers across platforms, Rapido strengthens brand visibility and goodwill among thousands of active riders, potentially encouraging more workers to associate with or eventually join the platform as captains.
