Three persons, including two college students, died on the spot after a two-wheeler collided with a milk van on the Jalagandapuram–Vanavasi Road here on Friday night (January 9, 2026).

The deceased were identified as Sanjay Bharathi (20) of Irupali village near Edappadi, a second-year college student, Mohan (20), a third-year student from the same village and Vimalraj (20) of Mecheri.

Police said Sanjay and Mohan were travelling on a two-wheeler along the Nangavalli–Edappadi Road. When they were nearing Papathikadu, a milk van coming from the Jalagandapuram–Nangavalli direction collided with the two-wheeler.

In the impact, the duo sustained grievous injuries and died on the spot. Vimalraj, who was travelling in the van, also died on the spot. Two others travelling in the van sustained injuries and were admitted to a private hospital. The bodies were shifted to the Government Hospital in Mettur. The Nangavalli police registered a case.

On Saturday (Janaury 10, 2026), alleging that poor road conditions and unrepaired damage had led to frequent accidents, residents blocked the Nangavalli–Jalagandapuram Road at Bharathi Nagar. Traffic was disrupted for about 30 minutes. Omalur DSP Sanjeev Kumar and Mettur Tahsildar Ramesh held talks with the protesters and assured them that repair works would be carried out. Following the assurance, the protest was withdrawn.
