Hyderabad: Dr Koyyala Ruth John Paul, who overcame several challenges to complete her MBBS and MD as a transgender woman, has finally become a senior resident at the ESI Hospital in Sanathnagar.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Dr Ruth said, “After struggling to secure an MD seat in emergency medicine, I am now going to earn nearly `1 lakh a month as a senior resident at ESI Hospital. This is a contractual position. Later, I will have to apply for an assistant professor post when the government releases vacancies.”

“This journey was not easy. Everyone thought I would not be able to mingle with them, but within a few months, they started asking, ‘Where is Ruth madam?’ That was an honour for me,” she explained.

“After two of us from our community entered this field, another person is fighting for an opportunity in Andhra Pradesh. We share our case files with members of our community and encourage them to dream big. There are opportunities, but they come through hard work and after overcoming many difficulties. I sustained myself on stipends that were very low. Now, my family is happy that I will be able to earn,” Dr Ruth said.

“This journey has been tough, but I have almost reached my goal. Becoming a doctor and serving people has always been my dream.”
