TIRUPATI: The presiding deities of Sri Kodandarama Swamy Temple at Vontimitta in Kadapa district are set to be adorned with gold plated kavachams, replacing the existing brass armour.

Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) trust board has taken a decision to this effect as part of its efforts to enhance Vontimitta temple’s spiritual grandeur and reflect its heritage. TTD has earmarked ₹1.61 crore for the purpose.

The gold-plated kavachams will adorn the moola virat idols of Sri Kodandarama Swamy, Sri Sita Devi, and Sri Lakshmana Swamy. The work will involve the use of one kilogram of 24 carat gold and 40 kilograms of copper sheets.

Earlier, the Sri Kodandarama Swamy Temple archakas had made a request to the TTD, pointing out that the present brass kavachams adorning the deities do not complement the gold crowns, necklaces, yagnopaveethams and other ornaments provided by the TTD after it took over the temple. They stated that gold-plated kavachams would lend a more divine appearance to the deities, enhancing the ceremonial grandeur.

TTD officials said of the ₹1.61-crore cost, ₹1.54 crore is earmarked for materials for the kavachams, including gold. ₹7 lakh will be towards labour charges, GST, and other incidental expenses. They said the estimate is as per the prevailing gold price on June 17, 2026. The final cost would depend on the market rate at the time of procurement. The labour component will be finalised through an e-tender process.

TTD will extend one kilogram of 24 carat gold from its Treasury and 40 kilograms of copper sheets available with its Jewellery section.

Vontimitta temple has been under the TTD administration since 2015. State government recognises it as a State Temple. Its annual Sri Seetharama Kalyanamahotsavam is celebrated as an official state festival. The shrine is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India.
