Known for his successful outings in comedy and horror, Tusshar says he doesn’t consciously seek out specific genres. “Each film has its own journey,” he told Deccan Chronicle in an exclusive chat. “It’s not about horror or comedy. But yes, I’ve had a special connection with this genre—it’s worked for me. My first production, Laxmmi Bomb, was also in this space. So, I hope the trend continues with Kapkapiii.”
With over two decades in the industry, Kapoor believes acting is closely tied to real-life experience. “We don’t exist in a vacuum. The more you experience life—the highs and lows—the more it reflects in your performance,” he says. “Acting isn’t real, but it must feel real. That only happens when it comes from the heart.”
Tusshar, who made his digital debut with a horror-comedy, also weighed in on what defines good cinema today. “The definition is now very subjective. It’s no longer just about box office numbers. With OTT and satellite platforms, films have multiple lives. Good cinema is what keeps audiences glued for two-and-a-half hours, entertains them, and lets them go home feeling lighter.”
Up next, Kapoor will be seen in Welcome to the Jungle, the third film in the Welcome franchise. “I play the manager of an ex-superstar—originally written as a female character,” he reveals. Directed by Ahmed Khan, the film features a star-studded cast and blends comedy, emotion, and nationalism. “It’s a war film within a film. It’s topical, fun, and packed with comic moments.”
According to Tusshar, the ensemble cast is the film’s biggest strength. “It’s a visual treat—so many comic stars in one frame. It reminds me of the multi-starrers from the ’80s. It’s a new genre for Indian cinema but still in the Welcome universe.”
On the ongoing debate around star power, Kapoor is clear: “Star culture still exists. We idolise heroes and heroines in our country. But this is also the age of actors—especially with OTT. Good films need good actors and stars. Everyone has their own space and time.”
As for future plans, Kapoor says he’s currently reading scripts but has no confirmed project as a producer yet. “I’m waiting for the right subject. Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to completing Welcome to the Jungle. Some great scenes have already been shot.”
With Kapkapiii and Welcome to the Jungle in the pipeline, Tusshar Kapoor is banking on content-driven yet entertaining films to connect with evolving audiences—across platforms.
