Two policemen of the Shahbad Dairy police station sustained stab wounds while trying to arrest a habitual offender during a planned robbery in the area, the police said on Monday.
The injured persons, head constable Kuldeep and constable Neeraj, were rushed to MV Hospital and they are reportedly out of danger. The accused, Ravi alias Panchi, was arrested and knife and a country-made pistol were seized from him. A case has been registered under Sections 132 (using criminal force against a public servant), 221 (voluntarily obstructing a public servant), 109(1) (attempt to murder) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.
The incident occurred on Saturday, when the police received information about a planned robbery in Shahbad Dairy’s Gupta Colony. A police team foiled the attempt but Ravi stabbed Mr. Kuldeep and Mr. Neeraj while trying to evade arrest.
Mr. Kuldeep sustained two deep stab wounds to his upper back and near the armpit. The accused launched three strikes at Mr. Neeraj’s waist, two of which were deflected by his service belt, though he still sustained a puncture wound near the hip.
According to the police, the two constables managed to physically overpower Ravi before he could use the pistol.
The accused has been previously been involved in 12 cases, including armed robbery, snatching, breaking and entering, and violations of the Arms Act.
