Lucas Tony, a 11-year-old student from Greendale Primary School, Punggol who is diligent in studies as well as in sports has proven his presence in English Literature by writing a novel named Stone Legends – The Time Stone. He devours any book he finds and is enthusiastic about topics related to science and adventure. He had represented his school in various science competitions and also in NSG. At a young age, inspired from the books he read, he had penned one himself. He believes age is not a limiting factor and all should express themselves with freedom and authenticity for the betterment of the society. The libraries in and around Singapore and various online reading platforms have helped him expand his reading horizon. This love for reading helped him craft his debut novel.

About the Book:

Set in the ancient era where kingdoms fight against kingdoms to expand their territories with most of the Kings being greedy to achieve this goal by any means are a common scene and so is his villain. Detailed descriptions of the characters, events and situations make this book an epic one.

  1. What are your writing strategies?

I had a plot in my mind. I researched a few details to bring clarity and accuracy to the specific events such as battles. Movies have also inspired me to structure a scene by scene progression.

    2. What are the Challenges faced during the writing journey?

Managing school work and writing was a bit difficult. Sometimes I struggled with the writer’s block and other times it was just a matter of not having enough time. I would jot down the points while in class or at other moments and later as soon as I reach home I would develop the idea further.  Later finding a publisher was even harder. I was included throughout the editing and printing journey, where I had to deal with multiple proof readings, alignment issues and many other unexpected changes all while trying to preserve the creativity intact.

    3. What motivated you to write a book?

The support from my parents who have made my dream come true fill me with immense confidence. Having the opportunity to promote my book and speak about it at school has been incredibly motivating. Inspiring words from school mates irrespective of which level they are describing the characters or asking for a sequel, motivates me to work on the next book. Well-wishers around the globe have created a sense of responsibility in me.

    4. How do you feel after your achievement?

I dreamt of writing a book, but never thought I would get such a breakthrough. I really feel happy and proud when others say I have inspired them to pursue their dreams too.

      5. What are your future plans/aspirations:

I have already begun working on the sequel to my book. I also have a plot for another story in a different genre.  But I’m taking it slow for now as I’m focusing on my PSLE preps. I also plan to take up  professional writing courses to improve my skills. Additionally,  I understand the importance of illustrations in children’s books which is lacking in my book and will be included in  my future  works.

      6. What are the Insights gained through the writing process:

Reading is the key. We need to explore different genres, different authors to have an elaborate understanding of literature. After my PSLE, I plan to join book clubs or writers’ groups where I can receive mentorship and constructive feedback.

      7. In your opinion, what pulls back many children  from writing books?

I think Singapore’s education system is more than enough to nurture the literary talent in every child. First of all we should have a genuine love for the language and then utilise our time efficiently. Mobile phones consume most of our precious time and keep us distracted. Ultimately it all depends on your passion.

Biggest challenge for young writers, including me, is not knowing how to proceed after finishing a piece of writing. We are unsure how to market it or how to make it available to a larger audience. These things are still vague. As a result, many students who write amazing stories end up sharing them only with their friends, simply because they don’t have access to proper publishing channels.

      8. Any memorable anecdotes to share?

My school has kept a few copies of my book in our library. One day during recess, a group of enthusiastic P1 boys approached me and said that they are eagerly waiting for my next book. They  kept on asking me if it will be a sequel or if it will be something entirely new. My friends often enact some scenes and quote lines from my book. I often see students asking for the book, only to hear the librarian say it’s currently on loan. All these moments are incredibly special to me.

      9. Any messages you want to share?

I would like to say, young or old, and no matter which language is your expertise, you all can contribute. If I can do it , so can you.
