أُفرج، اليوم (الإثنين)، عن رئيس الوزراء التايلندي الأسبق ثاكسين شيناواترا، بعفو مشروط، بعد قضائه ثمانية أشهر في السجن، وذلك عقب حكم قضائي ألزمه بتنفيذ عقوبة كان قد تجنبها سابقاً عبر البقاء لفترة طويلة داخل أحد المستشفيات.
وخرج الملياردير البالغ من العمر 76 عاماً من سجن «كلونغ بريم» في العاصمة بانكوك وسط استقبال حافل من أنصاره، الذين احتشد المئات منهم مرتدين اللون الأحمر، رمز حزب «فيو تاي»، مرددين هتافات داعمة له.
وظهر ثاكسين مبتسماً مرتدياً قميصاً أبيض فضفاضاً، بينما احتضن أفراد أسرته، ومن بينهم ابنته ووريثته السياسية باتونجتارن شيناواترا، التي أقالتها المحكمة من منصب رئيسة الوزراء في أغسطس الماضي، قبل عشرة أيام فقط من سجن والدها.
وردّ ثاكسين على سؤال للصحفيين حول شعوره بعد الإفراج عنه قائلاً إنه يشعر بـ«الارتياح»، مضيفاً بسخرية: «كنت في حالة سبات، ولا أتذكر شيئاً الآن».
عودة دراماتيكية من المنفى
وكان ثاكسين قد عاد إلى تايلند عام 2023 بعد 15 عاماً من المنفى الاختياري، لتنفيذ حكم بالسجن لمدة ثماني سنوات صدر بحقه في قضايا تتعلق بتضارب المصالح وإساءة استخدام السلطة خلال فترة رئاسته للحكومة بين عامي 2001 و2006.
وجاءت عودته في اليوم نفسه الذي انتُخب فيه حليف سياسي له رئيساً للوزراء، ما أثار جدلاً واسعاً داخل البلاد.
ورغم الحكم الصادر بحقه، لم يقضِ ثاكسين ليلة واحدة داخل السجن في البداية، إذ جرى نقله مباشرة إلى جناح خاص بأحد المستشفيات بعد شكواه من مشكلات قلبية وآلام في الصدر.
وفي وقت لاحق، خفّض ملك تايلند مدة العقوبة إلى عام واحد فقط، قبل أن يُمنح الإفراج المشروط بعد ستة أشهر من العلاج بالمستشفى.
غير أن المحكمة العليا رأت لاحقاً أن فترة بقائه في المستشفى طالت بشكل غير مبرر، معتبرة أن بعض العمليات الجراحية التي خضع لها لم تكن ضرورية، وأمرت بإعادة احتساب المدة داخل السجن.
نفوذ سياسي تراجع تدريجياً
وعلى مدى أكثر من ربع قرن، شكّل ثاكسين أحد أبرز الوجوه السياسية في تايلاند، وتمكن من فرض نفوذ واسع عبر سلسلة من الحكومات الشعبوية المرتبطة بعائلة شيناواترا.
لكن نفوذه السياسي تراجع خلال الفترة الأخيرة، خصوصاً بعد الإطاحة بابنته من رئاسة الوزراء، في سادس مرة يُعزل فيها رئيس حكومة من العائلة عبر القضاء أو الانقلابات العسكرية.
كما شهد حزب «فيو تاي»، الذي كان يوماً القوة السياسية الأكبر في البلاد، تراجعاً غير مسبوق بعد خسارته القاسية في انتخابات فبراير الماضي، ليتحول إلى شريك صغير داخل الائتلاف الحاكم بقيادة رئيس الوزراء الحالي أنوتين تشارنفيراكول.
مستقبل سياسي غامض
ويرى مراقبون أن الإفراج عن ثاكسين قد يمنح دفعة جديدة لحزب «فيو تاي»، إلا أن خبراء حذروا من عودته المباشرة إلى المشهد السياسي.
وبحسب وكالة رويترز، قال الأكاديمي التايلندي تيتيبول فاكديوانيش إن ثاكسين «أفرط في استخدام نفوذه خلال السنوات الماضية»، مضيفاً أن بقاءه خلف الكواليس سيكون الخيار الأكثر أماناً، رغم صعوبة ذلك بالنظر إلى شخصيته السياسية المؤثرة.
وبموجب شروط الإفراج، سيُجبر ثاكسين على ارتداء سوار إلكتروني للمراقبة حتى انتهاء مدة عقوبته في سبتمبر المقبل.
في المقابل، عبّر أنصاره عن سعادتهم بالإفراج عنه، معتبرين أنه تعرض للظلم، حيث قالت إحدى المؤيدات أمام السجن إن ثاكسين «كان دائماً يعمل من أجل الشعب ويسعى لتحسين مستوى معيشة المواطنين».
Today (Monday), former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was released on conditional parole after spending eight months in prison, following a court ruling that required him to serve a sentence he had previously avoided by staying for an extended period in a hospital.
The 76-year-old billionaire emerged from “Klong Prem” prison in Bangkok to a warm welcome from his supporters, hundreds of whom gathered wearing red, the symbol of the “Pheu Thai” party, chanting slogans in support of him.
Thaksin appeared smiling, wearing a loose white shirt, while embracing family members, including his daughter and political heir Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who was ousted from her position as Prime Minister by the court last August, just ten days before her father’s imprisonment.
In response to a question from reporters about how he felt after his release, Thaksin said he felt “relieved,” adding sarcastically, “I was in a state of hibernation, and I don’t remember anything now.”
Drama of Return from Exile
Thaksin returned to Thailand in 2023 after 15 years of voluntary exile to serve an eight-year prison sentence issued against him for conflicts of interest and abuse of power during his tenure as Prime Minister from 2001 to 2006.
His return coincided with the election of a political ally as Prime Minister, sparking widespread controversy within the country.
Despite the ruling against him, Thaksin did not spend a single night in prison initially, as he was transferred directly to a special hospital wing after complaining of heart problems and chest pains.
Later, the King of Thailand reduced his sentence to just one year, before he was granted conditional release after six months of hospital treatment.
However, the Supreme Court later deemed that his stay in the hospital had been unnecessarily prolonged, considering that some of the surgeries he underwent were not essential, and ordered the recalculation of the time spent in prison.
Gradually Declining Political Influence
For more than a quarter of a century, Thaksin has been one of the most prominent political figures in Thailand, managing to exert wide influence through a series of populist governments linked to the Shinawatra family.
However, his political influence has declined recently, especially after his daughter was ousted from the premiership, marking the sixth time a government leader from the family has been removed through the judiciary or military coups.
The “Pheu Thai” party, once the largest political force in the country, has also seen unprecedented decline after its severe loss in the February elections, becoming a minor partner in the ruling coalition led by current Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
Uncertain Political Future
Observers believe that Thaksin’s release could provide a new boost for the “Pheu Thai” party, but experts have warned against his direct return to the political scene.
According to Reuters, Thai academic Titipol Pookpasuk stated that Thaksin “overused his influence in recent years,” adding that remaining behind the scenes would be the safest option, despite the difficulty of that given his influential political personality.
Under the terms of his release, Thaksin will be required to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet until the end of his sentence in September.
In contrast, his supporters expressed their happiness at his release, considering that he had been wronged, with one supporter stating outside the prison that Thaksin “has always worked for the people and sought to improve the living standards of citizens.”
