An American scientific study conducted by researchers at Florida International University found that the effects of sleep disorders are not limited to feelings of fatigue during the day, but extend to changes in areas of the brain responsible for attention, decision-making, and emotional regulation.

The researchers analyzed the results of 57 previous studies that relied on brain imaging techniques, comparing individuals with different types of sleep disorders; they found a correlation between these disorders and changes in important brain areas, including the posterior cingulate cortex and the thalamus, which are regions associated with behavior, emotions, information processing, and focus.

They noted that these changes may explain some of the symptoms experienced by sufferers, such as mood swings, poor emotional control, and decreased attention, which may increase the likelihood of injuries, especially among older adults who suffer from fragmented sleep.

Dr. Matthew Sutherland, a cognitive neuroscientist at the university and the leader of the research team, stated: “The study provides a broader understanding of how sleep disorders affect the structure and function of the brain, and may help in developing more precise therapeutic interventions and tailored care for patients.”

Experts confirmed that the results of the study could contribute to the development of diagnostic tools and treatments tailored for various sleep disorders, supporting the maintenance of brain functions related to attention, decision-making, and emotional balance.

The importance of the study did not stop at observing brain changes alone, but extended to highlighting the broad social and health impact of sleep disorders, as the results indicate that disruptions in neural structure may reflect on the quality of daily life and affect an individual’s ability to make quick decisions, cope with stress, and maintain emotional balance. Researchers emphasize that these effects do not appear suddenly, but accumulate over time, making sleep disorders one of the silent factors that weaken cognitive performance without many noticing.

The study also pointed out that these disorders may be more dangerous for groups that rely on continuous alertness, such as drivers, medical workers, students, and athletes, where any decline in attention or slowing in information processing can lead to errors or potential injuries. Researchers indicate that understanding this relationship between sleep and the brain may open the door to developing preventive programs aimed at improving sleep quality as a means to enhance mental performance and reduce daily risks.

Experts believe that the new findings represent an important step toward building more accurate diagnostic tools based on brain imaging to determine the type of disorder and its impact on different neural areas, which may allow for tailored treatments for each case. The research team asserts that the future may witness therapeutic interventions that combine modifications in daily behaviors, pharmacological treatment, and modern neurological techniques; aimed at protecting brain functions related to attention, decision-making, and emotional regulation, which are essential for mental and cognitive health.
