Lege-Cap-Ferret, France: Firefighters battling a massive wildfire in southwestern France are facing renewed challenges as a heat wave and strong winds threaten to reignite the blaze near Bordeaux.
Authorities in the Gironde region said temperatures are expected to exceed 40°C on Wednesday, creating hazardous conditions for crews working to contain a fire that has already burned an area roughly four times the size of Paris.
In an update on Wednesday morning, Gironde officials said the situation overnight had remained calm and there had been no further spread of the fire. However, the blaze remains uncontained more than a week after it began.
The arrival of extreme heat and stronger winds has heightened concerns that flames could intensify again.
Evacuations continue
The wildfire has already forced the evacuation of approximately 220,000 people, making it one of France’s largest peacetime evacuation operations.
On Tuesday, authorities ordered an additional 4,000 people to leave tourist sites along the Atlantic coast as a precautionary measure.
At the same time, around 60,000 residents were allowed to return to their homes in three Bordeaux suburbs that have escaped the fire so far.
Gironde Prefect Sophie Brocas cautioned that the situation remains fragile.
“The situation remains complicated. That’s clear. We’re not out of the woods,” she said.
Officials told returning residents to remain vigilant as weather conditions could rapidly change.
Wildfires affect France and Spain
Across France and Spain, an estimated 330,000 people have been forced to leave their homes and holiday destinations due to a wave of major wildfires.
Spain, meanwhile, is preparing for its fourth heat wave of the summer, although authorities have begun lifting some evacuation and stay-at-home orders after firefighters made progress against several major blazes.
Some fires in Spain remain out of control, including what officials have described as the largest wildfire in the country’s recorded history.
Rare fire-generated storm
At the height of its intensity, the Gironde wildfire generated a massive pyrocumulonimbus cloud — a rare storm system created by extreme heat from large fires.
The towering cloud produced lightning, violent winds and additional fires beyond the main fire front.
French authorities said it was the first recorded pyrocumulonimbus event in the country’s history.
Climate concerns
According to France’s Interior Ministry, more than 1,160 square kilometres have burned across the country so far this year.
Scientists say extreme heat and prolonged dry conditions have contributed to the scale and intensity of the fires.
Europe is warming faster than any other continent, with temperatures rising at more than twice the global average rate. Western Europe experienced its hottest June on record this year, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.
The combination of record temperatures, drought and strong winds has created ideal conditions for wildfires to spread rapidly across parts of southern Europe.
