Hyderabad: Close on the heels of food poisoning incidents in ST and SC Gurukul hostels at different locations in the state, a fresh case of suspected food poisoning occurred at a BC Welfare Gurukul hostel in Nagarkurnool district, where 111 Intermediate students were hospitalised after eating cabbage curry for dinner.
The students complained of stomach pain and vomiting on Saturday night. Following directions from district officials, the hostel staff shifted all 111 students to Nagarkurnool Government Hospital.
According to the hostel staff, cabbage curry was served for dinner on Saturday. Hours later, the students began complaining of stomach pain and vomiting.
Nagarkurnool Tahsildar K. Tabitha Rani said most of the students had been discharged from the hospital.
“No food poisoning was confirmed by the doctors. It was an illness caused by an infection, and the students have now recovered. We will examine the issue of serving potentially contaminated food to the students,” the tahsildar said.
Doctors and staff at the government hospital collected food samples for examination. Based on the test reports, officials will take appropriate action.
Earlier, several students in hostels in Suryapet and Sangareddy districts suffered from stomach pain and vomiting. During the inquiry, district authorities found that the hostel staff had failed to maintain hygiene while cooking. They issued warnings to hostel officials to prevent further such incidents.
