Though the tally fell short of the record set in Hangzhou, India continued its strong showing on the continental stage, with notable performances across several sporting disciplines. The early losses in shooting and athletics were offset by a timely gold rush in boxing, archery, wrestling, and hockey. A late gold rush by the Indian men’s cricket team also helped strengthen India’s campaign. Teenagers Kumkum Mohod and Pranavi Urs won surprise gold medals. Eleven of these 21 gold medals came in the last two days.

Athletics

India’s lone athletics gold came in the women’s 4x400m relay. Kiran Pahal, M.R. Poovamma, Prachi Choudhary and Vithya Ramraj combined to clinch the title.

The gold provided a rare bright spot for an Indian athletics contingent that had won 29 medals, including six gold, at Hangzhou.

Shooting

10m air pistol mixed team: Kamaljeet and Suruchi Singh opened India’s gold account in shooting by winning the mixed team 10m air pistol title.

Neeru Dhanda produced one of the defining individual performances of India’s campaign. Her women’s trap gold ended India’s 48-year wait for an individual Asian Games trap title, with the previous one coming through Randhir Singh in 1978.

Neeru then teamed up with Kynan Chenai to win the mixed team trap gold. Their score of 34 hits out of 40 was an Asian record, while the victory gave India its first Asian Games gold in the mixed team trap event.

Kabaddi

The Indian women’s team reclaimed the Asian Games title, while the men’s team also finished on top to complete a kabaddi double in Aichi-Nagoya. The two titles made kabaddi one of India’s four gold-winning team sports, alongside cricket and hockey.

Hockey

The women’s hockey team ended a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold. The men’s team retained its crown by beating Malaysia in the final. It was India’s first successful defence of the men’s hockey title at the Asian Games and, like the women’s triumph, secured qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Cricket

India won the women’s T20 cricket gold, adding another Asian Games title to its achievements in the format. The men’s team completed a cricket double by clinching the men’s T20 title.

Archery

The women’s compound team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Prithika Pradeep and Chikitha Taniparthi won India’s first archery gold of the Games.

Chikitha Taniparthi teamed up with Sahil Jadhav to win the mixed compound team title.

Sahil Jadhav added a second team gold, joining Kushal Dalal and Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru to win the men’s compound team event.

Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Anil Mohod delivered a historic victory in the women’s recurve team event. It was India’s first Asian Games gold in the event and ended South Korea’s 28-year hold on the title.

Kumkum then produced one of India’s biggest individual breakthroughs of the Games, winning the country’s first Asian Games gold in the women’s individual recurve event.

Parveen Hooda added another gold in the women’s 65kg category, making it a particularly successful Games for India’s women boxers.

Ankush Panghal completed India’s boxing gold rush with victory in the men’s 75kg category. India’s three boxing gold medals marked a resurgence in the sport after a comparatively difficult outing at Hangzhou.

Wrestling

Aman Sehrawat won the men’s 57kg freestyle title, becoming the first Indian wrestler to claim an Asian Games gold in the category.

Sujeet Kalkal added India’s second wrestling gold by winning the men’s 65kg freestyle title. His victory was India’s first Asian Games wrestling gold since 2018.

Golf

Pranavi Urs made history by winning the women’s individual golf title. It was India’s first Asian Games gold medal in golf, giving the country another landmark triumph in Aichi-Nagoya.

A contingent of 501 Indian athletes, comprising 267 men and 234 women, competed across 36 disciplines at the 2026 Asian Games. At the previous Hangzhou Games, India finished fourth behind China, Japan and South Korea, with an impressive haul of 106 medals.
