Hyderabad: The reshuffle of IPS officers in Hyderabad has drawn attention to postings as well as the abrupt transfer of senior officer Avinash Mohanty from the post of commissioner of police, Malkajgiri, within 115 days of his appointment, police said.
Mohanty, a 2005-batch IPS officer, had taken charge on December 30, 2025, following the reorganisation of the commissionerates in the Greater Hyderabad region. His tenure is among the shortest for the unit, earlier known as Rachakonda. The transfer comes amid a broader reshuffle that officials said was aimed at strengthening policing in the city.
The reorganisation in December 2025 led to the creation of the Future City Commissionerate to address rising crime. Senior officer Sudheer Babu was appointed to head the new unit at the time.
During his short tenure, Mohanty pushed for faster case registration and authorised head constables to register cases to improve response time at the police station level, police said. He had implemented similar measures earlier during his stint in Cyberabad.
Mohanty had previously served as Cyberabad commissioner after the formation of the Congress government. During that tenure, he had registered a case against a firm linked to minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, acting in a professional capacity, according to police sources.
Towards the end of the month, DGP B. Shivadhar Reddy had called Mohanty and asked where he stayed. When he replied that he lived in Maredpally, the DGP remarked that Malkajgiri would be closer for him. Mohanty took charge on December 30, and his current transfer came just 115 days later.
In the same reshuffle, Sumathi, a 2006-batch IPS officer, was posted as commissioner, becoming the first woman to head one of the four commissionerates in Hyderabad. She has served as inspector-general of the Special Intelligence Branch and was involved in the surrender and reintegration of Maoist cadre, police said.
Tarun Joshi, a 2004-batch IPS officer and Director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau, has been posted as commissioner of the Future City Commissionerate, replacing Sudheer Babu, who will retire on April 30. Joshi had earlier served as Commissioner of Malkajgiri during the state elections. The orders stated that the new postings will take effect from May 1.
