The Tiruchi Corporation has resumed reconstruction of a culvert over a storm water drain close to the Parangiri Velupillai Park near the District Court roundabout in the city. The work had apparently been suspended due to the intervening Assembly election, causing much inconvenience to motorists at the roundabout.
The work was taken up in February by the Corporation and was partially completed near the entrance to the District Court campus. The civic body had decided to reconstruct the culvert to increase the capacity of the drain as it was overflowing frequently in the area.
However, on the other side, opposite to the Cantonment Police Station, the work was left unfinished. According to sources, the police had requested the Corporation to suspend the work temporarily in view of election as the work had caused a traffic bottleneck at the roundabout.
The partial closure of the entry and exit points of Heber Road near the District Court Roundabout to facilitate the reconstruction of storm-water drains along Parangiri Velupillai Park had resulted in heavy traffic congestion, inconveniencing motorists, particularly during peak hours.
A senior Corporation official said that a portion of the work had already been completed, while the remaining work was temporarily put on hold owing to the election process. The work site was barricaded as a precautionary safety measure.
However, the steel barricade placed near a gaping hole of the drain had constricted the road space at the spot as vehicles, especially buses and other heavy vehicles, faced much difficulty in taking the acute left turn there. The resumption of the work would come as a relief to motorists.
“The pending work has now resumed and is expected to be completed within a week,” the official said.
