Hyderabad: Director-General of Police C.V. Anand on Saturday called for comprehensive reforms to ensure effective maintenance of law and order and delivering the highest standards of accountable public service. Anand observed that the government was expecting that the police functioning would change in line with the changing social circumstances and new challenges which are arising.
He was addressing a video conference with officers from the sub-inspector level to commissioners and superintendents of police on the theme, “adoption of effective policing standards.”
Anand said that negligence in duties, violations of procedures, lack of respect for the hierarchical system and instances of corruption, should be checked and stressed the need to abandon outdated practices and bring about a significant transformation in service delivery. He called for strict discipline by personnel at all levels.
The DGP noted that for the past three decades, the state police had primarily focused its strategies on combating Maoism. As Maoist influence has largely disappeared over the last 15 years, he said the time had come to reassess the need for continuing with specialised units such as the Greyhounds and to consider their restructuring in line with current requirements.
He directed all officers to participate in the fight against the growing menace of narcotic drugs, and to strengthen efforts to curb cybercrime. The DGP instructed officers not to compromise on women’s safety and prevention of child trafficking, and called for further strengthening of the Bharosa centres and She Teams.
Senior officials, Mahesh M. Bhagwat, V.V. Srinivasa Rao and Charu Sinha briefed the participants on the activities of their respective departments. DG (SPF) Swati Lakra, IGPs Chandra Sekhar Reddy, Ramesh Naidu and Gajarao Bhupal were present.
