The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is set to organise “Yogandhra-2026” on a large scale across the city as part of the International Day of Yoga (IDY)-2026 celebrations.

In a release on Monday, GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg announced that the civic body will conduct various events under the “Yoga Month” banner from June 7 to June 20, culminating in a grand celebration of the International Day of Yoga on June 21.

The initiative aligns with the State government’s “Healthy Andhra” vision under Vision 2047.

Mr. Garg emphasised that the primary objective of the programme is to integrate yoga into the daily lives of citizens to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. To ensure the programme reaches every corner of the city, the Commissioner has directed Zonal Commissioners to formulate specific action plans. Ward-level committees are being constituted for this purpose, with the Ward Administrative Secretary serving as the chairperson, alongside the Ward Revenue Secretary, the Women Welfare and Protection Secretary, and an ANM or a representative from the Health Department.

The civic body is currently in the process of identifying yoga trainers for every three to four wards and designating suitable public spaces for daily practice. Mr. Garg has instructed officials to ensure that all necessary arrangements—including sound systems, drinking water, medical aid, sanitation, and security—are in place at these venues.
