Visakhapatnam: Heavy rainfall is predicted for various districts of coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next two days, following a gradual weakening of the low-pressure area over the west central Bay of Bengal and its adjoining regions.

The low-pressure system influencing weather patterns has moved west-northwestward and is becoming less marked, IMD said in a statement.

However, its associated cyclonic circulation remains active over south Chhattisgarh, extending up to 5.8km above mean sea level and tilting southwards. This system would continue affecting weather conditions, particularly in the coastal regions.

A yellow alert has been issued due to the likelihood of heavy rainfall in one or two locations across several districts in Andhra Pradesh. These districts are Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Kakinada, East Godavari, the BR Ambedkar Konaseema, Eluru, West Godavari, NTR, Palnadu and Prakasam, along with Yanam.

In addition to heavy rains, strong surface winds with speeds of 30-40 km/h are predicted for isolated places across north coastal AP, south coastal AP and Rayalaseema.

According to the Visakhapatnam cyclone warning centre, the following rainfall amounts were recorded over the past 24 hours: Yanam (Yanam district) 12cm, Podili (Prakasam district) 11cm, Anakapalli (Anakapalli district) 9cm, Narsipatnam (Anakapalli district) 8cm, Markapur (Prakasam district) 8cm, Vepada (Vizianagaram district) 8cm, Cumbum (Prakasam district) 7cm, Konakanamitla (Prakasam district) 7cm, Bestavaripeta (Prakasam district) 7cm, Darsi (Prakasam district) 7cm, Guntur (Guntur district) 7cm, Repalle (Bapatla district) 7cm, Tadepalligudem (West Godavari district) 7cm.

IMD’s five-day weather forecast indicates that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning may also occur at isolated locations in NCAP and Yanam as well as south coastal AP and Rayalaseema on the second to the fifth days of the forecast period.
