Hyderabad’s Dharna Chowk on Sunday reverberated with chants of “Azadi Azadi” and “Inquilab Zindabad”, as hundreds of protestors and citizens participated in a protest demonstration against the police actions in New Delhi and Jantar Mantar. They called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and demanded the scrapping of Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
Organised by the Bhagat Singh Jan Adhikar Yatra (BSJAY) and Disha Students Organisation, protesters demanded for the resignation of the CEC, and condemned the severe police brutality towards protestors, media representatives and common citizens in New Delhi.
Retired IAS Akunuri Murali, who also joined the protest, said “We have freedom of expression. Ours is a democratic nation, and we have our freedom of speech. We should raise our voices against the injustice.”
Ibrahim from the Disha Students Organisation condemned the Union home ministry and Delhi police for turning the national capital into a militarised zone, stating that the Modi-Shah regime has suspended the Constitution in broad daylight.
Speaking about voter deletion, he said, “The Election Commission is being weaponised through SIR to strip vulnerable sections like Muslims, poor Dalits, Adivasis, and women of their voting rights. By demanding rigid proof such as decades-old voter records of parents under Form 6, and systematically rejecting standard government identification like Aadhaar cards, ration cards, and driving licenses, SIR is targeting Dalits, Adivasis, Muslims, migrant workers, and women.”
