BHUBANESWAR: A young man displayed exceptional courage by rescuing two people stranded in the swollen Nagavali River in Odisha’s Rayagada district, averting a major tragedy.

The incident occurred near Imaliguda village under Kolnara block when a tractor attempting to cross the river got trapped in the strong current. The driver, identified as Prakash Pedenti, and a minor remained stranded in the middle of the river as the swift flow made rescue efforts extremely hazardous.

While local residents gathered on the riverbank, none ventured into the water because of the dangerous current. A youth from nearby Intaliguda village, however, entered the river at great personal risk and successfully brought both the tractor driver and the minor to safety.

The daring rescue has drawn widespread appreciation from local residents.

The incident has also renewed demands for a permanent bridge over the Nagavali River. Villagers said nearly 10 villages and vast stretches of farmland lie across the river, forcing residents to wade through or cross the river regularly for farming and other essential activities, even during the monsoon.

Residents said the absence of a bridge continues to put lives at risk every year and urged the government to expedite construction of a permanent crossing to ensure safe connectivity and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Reports from Keonjhar said a Fire Services jawan was electrocuted while attempting to evacuate people stranded by floodwaters. The deceased was identified as Chandan Pattanayak.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep grief over the tragic loss of the firefighter.

“I am deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Agni Samma employee Chandan Pattanayak in a tragic accident while he was performing his duty. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family during this difficult time and pray to Lord Shri Jagannath to grant eternal peace to the departed soul,” the Chief Minister said.
