: In a keen contest, Sanjivani Jadhav overcame a late charge from Harmilan Bains to win the women’s 5000m in the Indian Athletics Series-11 at the SAI Centre here on Monday.

Sanjivani won the race with 16:47.16, while Harmilan (16:47.43) and Sonam Parmar (16:49.34) took second and third places following a thrilling finish.

Sanjivani, who stayed marginally ahead after about 10 minutes, maintained her lead while being closely chased by Harmilan and Sonam. In the last lap, Sonam moved forward briefly before Harmilan got into the lead at the final bend. However, the experienced Sanjivani wrested her lead with about 40m to go and won her season’s first 5000m race.

The stylish Dondapati M. Jayaram performed well despite a strong headwind as he emerged as fastest in men’s 100m with a time of 10.56, which was close to her season best 10.54 achieved in April. He also placed second in 200m with a time of 21.41.
