Kolkata: The West Bengal government has extended the suspension period of three senior IPS officers, Vineet Goyal, Abhishek Gupta and Indira Mukherjee, who have been facing departmental inquiry for their dereliction on duty in the probe of the rape and murder of a young doctor on-duty at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, by another four months.

According to sources, the departmental inquiry against them is yet to be over and the trio have already come under the scanner of the Central Bureau of Investigation in the case. The three IPS officers have been under suspension since May 15 when chief minister Suvendu Adhikari announced the step against them after BJP came to power in the state.

While Mr Goyal was the Kolkata Police Commissioner, Mr Gupta and Ms Mukherjee were his deputies in charge of north and central divisions respectively during the sensational crime. Recently, Mr Gupta and Ms Mukherjee were summoned by the CBI and their statements were recorded following a fresh Calcutta High Court order for a probe into the sequence of events before the crime on August 9 in 2024.
