تحولت رحلة عائلية إلى مأساة مفجعة، بعدما عُثر على جثث أربعة أفراد من عائلة أمريكية كانوا على متن طائرة خاصة اختفت وسقطت قبالة سواحل جزر البهاما، أثناء عودتهم من عطلة باتجاه جنوب ولاية فلوريدا.
وأفادت العائلة، الثلاثاء، بأن أفراداً منها، إلى جانب متطوعين مدنيين وفريق بحث وإنقاذ خاص، تحركوا على متن قواربهم للمساعدة في تحديد موقع الضحايا وانتشالهم، بالتنسيق مع خفر السواحل الأمريكي، تمهيداً لإعادتهم إلى الولايات المتحدة، وفقاً لصحيفة «نيوز ويك».
وكانت الطائرة الخاصة، وهي من طراز «بايبر PA-34» ذات المحركين والخمسة مقاعد، وتحمل رقم التسجيل «N212ML»، قد أقلعت، الإثنين، من «غريت هاربور كاي» في جزر «بيري»، متجهة إلى مطار «ميامي إكزيكيوتيف»، بعد انتهاء عطلة العائلة في منزلها هناك.
وكان على متن الطائرة قائدها ماريو لامار، البالغ من العمر 80 عاماً، وزوجته ليلي لامار، 79 عاماً، إلى جانب حفيديهما صوفيا سوسا، 28 عاماً، وهي مساعدة طبيب معتمدة لحديثي الولادة في ميامي، وكريستيان سوسا، 22 عاماً.
اختفاء مفاجئ من شاشات الرادار
فقدت أبراج المراقبة الاتصال بالطائرة على بُعد نحو 13 ميلاً غرب جزيرة «أندروس»، وسط اعتقاد بأنها سقطت في البحر قبالة منطقة «ريد بايز» شمال الجزيرة.
وأظهرت بيانات تتبع الرحلة تغيرات في سرعة الطائرة قبل أن تهبط بشكل حاد ومفاجئ من ارتفاع 10 آلاف قدم إلى نحو 3700 قدم خلال ثلاث دقائق فقط، قبل أن تختفي تماماً عن شاشات الرادار، فيما لا تزال أسباب سقوطها غير معروفة.
وقالت سيلفيا لارّيو، إحدى أفراد العائلة، إن عمها ماريو لامار يمتلك خبرة في الطيران تمتد لأكثر من 40 عاماً، وكان يسافر باستمرار إلى جزر البهاما، مشيرة إلى أنه كان شديد الحرص على صيانة طائرته، كما أكدت أن ظروف الطقس بدت جيدة عند إقلاعها.
سوء الأحوال الجوية يعرقل عمليات البحث
وكانت السلطات في جزر البهاما قد طلبت مساعدة خفر السواحل الأمريكي، بعد ظهر الإثنين، وأُرسلت طائرة بحث وإنقاذ من طراز «HC-144 Ocean Sentry» للمشاركة في عمليات البحث.
إلا أن سوء الأحوال الجوية أجبر فرق الإنقاذ الرسمية على تعليق عملياتها مساء الإثنين، قبل أن يتولى أقارب الضحايا ومتطوعون مدنيون مواصلة البحث باستخدام قوارب خاصة.
وأكدت قوة الشرطة الملكية في جزر البهاما انتشال رفات بشري من موقع الحادث، مع تشكيل فريق من الضباط لإجراء تحقيق شامل بشأن ملابسات سقوط الطائرة.
وفي الوقت نفسه، تواصلت وسائل إعلام مع هيئة التحقيق في حوادث الطائرات في جزر البهاما، في انتظار النتائج الرسمية التي قد تكشف أسباب الحادث والظروف التي أدت إلى سقوط الطائرة.
A family trip turned into a tragic disaster after the bodies of four members of an American family were found from a private plane that disappeared and crashed off the coast of the Bahamas while they were returning from a vacation heading south towards Florida.
The family reported on Tuesday that its members, along with civilian volunteers and a private search and rescue team, set out on their boats to help locate and recover the victims, in coordination with the U.S. Coast Guard, in preparation for their return to the United States, according to Newsweek.
The private plane, a Piper PA-34 twin-engine aircraft with five seats, registered as N212ML, took off on Monday from Great Harbor Cay in the Berry Islands, heading to Miami Executive Airport after the family’s vacation at their home there.
On board the plane were its pilot Mario Lamar, 80, his wife Lily Lamar, 79, along with their grandchildren Sofia Sosa, 28, a certified neonatal physician assistant in Miami, and Christian Sosa, 22.
Sudden disappearance from radar screens
The control towers lost contact with the plane about 13 miles west of Andros Island, amid belief that it had crashed into the sea off the Red Bays area north of the island.
Flight tracking data showed changes in the plane’s speed before it sharply and suddenly descended from an altitude of 10,000 feet to about 3,700 feet in just three minutes, before completely disappearing from radar screens, while the reasons for its crash remain unknown.
Sylvia Lario, a family member, stated that her uncle Mario Lamar had over 40 years of flying experience and frequently traveled to the Bahamas, noting that he was very meticulous about maintaining his aircraft, and she confirmed that the weather conditions appeared to be good at the time of takeoff.
Bad weather hinders search operations
The authorities in the Bahamas requested assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard on Monday afternoon, and a HC-144 Ocean Sentry search and rescue aircraft was dispatched to participate in the search operations.
However, bad weather forced official rescue teams to suspend their operations on Monday evening, before relatives of the victims and civilian volunteers continued the search using private boats.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed the recovery of human remains from the crash site, with a team of officers formed to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the plane’s crash.
Meanwhile, media outlets contacted the Bahamas Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority, awaiting official results that may reveal the causes of the incident and the circumstances that led to the plane’s crash.
